Meet Danny Morrigan. Callcentre worker. Young father. Danny’s not entirely happy with his life. He finds himself tortured by the "what ifs", and by one in particular – what if his casual girlfriend hadn’t told him she was pregnant before he finished his university degree? What if, out of some sense of decency and not wanting to be like his own father, he hadn’t “done the right thing” and dropped out to support her and the baby?

When Danny comes home from work after a particularly bad day to find his girlfriend and baby son have vanished, Marie Celeste like, into thin air, it begins a series of events that quickly moves beyond a simple missing persons case. Danny begins to uncover the Morrigan family's real purpose in this world, a world of lurking danger and concealed horror, where the line between mythology and reality blur. Before he knows it he’s living another life where (seemingly) he has everything he ever wanted…a good job, no responsibilities…but what is the cause of this change? Where have his family gone? Why doesn’t anyone remember his old life?

And most importantly, does he want it back?

Folk’d interweaves a very modern tale of unexpected parenthood and responsibility set in contemporary Belfast with ancient Irish mythology and the supernatural. In Folk’d and its sequels, Folk’d Up Beyond All Recognition and Completely Folk’d, we are taken on a humorous, sometimes horrifying, always enthralling journey from modern-day Belfast to prehistory as the full and tragic tale of the Morrigan family is told.

Folk'd eBook Laurence Donaghy Kevin Elliott Joanne Sayer

This came to me as a free Kindle download - I think because I had downloaded the WB Yeats collection of Irish Folk and Fairy Tales. I would classify this as modern or urban fantasy. Initially it was a bit of a slog - just a young couple's daily life in present day Belfast, Northern Ireland. The dialog was a bit off-putting - there is no denying that Irish youth are more than fond of the "f- and c- word" as a noun, verb, adjective, adverb, etc. I was caught up in how well the author had captured the minutia of work and babies and never having enough. But then the action picked up and the fantastical elements of the story came into play. It is not a spoiler to report that the main character is Danny Morrigan and that "The Morrigan" is a part of Irish mythology. The weaving of legend and reality is handled very well. Given the amount of white space on each page this may be a trilogy in name only - this first volume might be more of a novella than a novel - that is the main reason for the 4-star rating. I will be getting the next volume sooner rather than later. I do want to see how Danny handles the insanity of his situation when he has no special knowledge or skills - what he does have is the drive to right a wrong that he created.

Folk'd eBook Laurence Donaghy Kevin Elliott Joanne Sayer Reviews

Amazing book! Love, love, love this trilogy. .. once you read the first book you won't stop til you finish the third!
A very good read and an interesting take on Irish Mythology. Mr Donaghy has style, imagination and a lorry load of f-bombs and he is not afraid to use them. Seeing as this is a free book I'd urge people to get the book asap if only to enjoy a refreshing look at "the little people" that avoids all the "greenest than thou" and "shamrocks in yer guinness" variety.
I got this book free and can honestly say this was a great read. I loved the story. Since I'm from the US it did take me a minute to catch the meaning of some of the comments. It's witty and entertaining. I purchased the 2nd book immediately on finishing this one. The 2nd book was well worth the purchase price and I cannot wait for the 3rd. Well worth reading!
The book started off very slowly but once it picked up I really enjoyed the story. I particularly enjoyed the Irish working class voice. Especially from a father's perspective. The supernatural warrior story line, while good, took a back seat to the father/son interactions and growth.
First off, I generally try to avoid books with so many f-bombs. Yes, I understand that's how guys talk to each other.

That aside, I enjoyed the first book so much I paid for the second book, and now I'm waiting the third book to come out for so I can finish the story.

The author stated on a writing forum that he geared it toward guys rather than girls, but who doesn't (at least sometimes) feel like their life is an endless rut of working to pay bills to live to work to pay bills to live ... Sometimes you wonder what would have happened if you chose to go another way.

You just don't expect that other possibility to replace your reality. That's what happens to Danny. He made the choice to be a better father to his accidental son than his father (who abandoned the family when Danny was 10) was to him. So he has regrets about the choice he made.

Then his girlfriend and son suddenly disappear. And Danny's life changes in ways you don't expect.

Fairy tales are quite in vogue now, but this tale is different. I really enjoyed the story.
Being a yankee, I hardly understood what they were saying (not nearly as bad as Trainspotting), but I pick up quickly. I am in love with Danny. I will be your Ellie any day and have 5 Lukes with you. You can be my hero! The depth of the characters was just amazing. You don't get a lot of back story on them, but you know them just the same.

It was well written & engaging. I read any time I could. Between customers at work, on my lunch break, in the evening, into the wee hours of the morning...

Who would have thought faeries were such scary, spidy bastards? I wonder if the folk story is just that - true legend or if the author of this book made up that part. I'm leaning toward true.
This is a gritty love story, part mystery, but dont let the love story bit put you off. The hero is bored, challenged and wondering about his life when things go pear-shaped in ways that I didn't expect. The book is well written. as for the swearing - this is how guys talk to each other in Ireland. I hate reviews that tell the story. Suffice to say this story takes you to unexpected places. It's a wonderful book. I purchased the second book in the series straight after finishing the first. I know it will be worth it. You would be mad not to get Folk'd while it is still on the free book list. Well deserving of five stars.
